  1. School Prosecuted for Working at Height Accident

The National Film and Television School was recently prosecuted for two offences against the Health & safety at Work Act 1974 and the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999 over an incident where a woman, working as a volunteer costume designer, fell from an unguarded platform edge on the set.  The School pleaded guilty to both counts, and was fined £17,500 with costs of £4,787.

The incident, which happened in September 2008, left the 34 year old woman permanently paralysed from the waist down and in chronic pain.  After the hearing a spokesman for the HSE stated that the incident was preventable, and that a variety of methods may be used to prevent people and objects falling on theatre sets.  “It could be as simple as having edge protection at the end of a platform, or having safety restraint harnesses attached to people.”

Edge-Safe could have played a preventative role in these particular circumstances although was not yet on the market at the time.  Edge-Safe is now another tool in the armoury of duty holders charged with ensuring that theatre and film sets are as safe as reasonably practicable before and during productions.

Edge-Safe Ltd is delighted to announce that Edge-Safe was awarded the ABTT’s prestigious “Widget Product of the Year” Award for 2011.  The judges felt that Edge-Safe can make a significant contribution to safety in theatres by providing a low profile barrier to stop wheeled items like flight cases and Tallescopes falling from the front edge of the stage as well as protecting Performers and Crew.
